Abstract

This study investigates the actual conditions of employees on leaves of absence and the risk factors of recurrent leave for improving employment support. This study used records of interviews which were conducted by occupational physicians with employees at a university hospital between July 2019 and June 2022. Descriptive statistics were used to depict the actual conditions of employees on leaves of absence. The factors influencing recurrent leaves were investigated using multiple logistic regression analysis. Interviewee with industrial physician was 227, 154 of these were leaves of absence. Continuous employments were 73, recurrent leaves were 42, retired employees were 39. The rate of recurrent leaves at 27.3% (42/154). Recurrent leave factors showed a significant negative association between recurrent leaves and “physical problems as reason for leave” (OR 0.33, 95% CI 0.11–0.90) and a positive association with “duration of leave over 90 days” (OR 5.36, 95% CI 2.16–14.14). In the university hospital, “duration of leave over 90 days” and “physical health problems as reason for leave” showed a high and low risk, respectively, for recurrent leaves.
