As a middle school librarian(and a soon-to-be-appointed member of the Board of Trustees of our local public library system),I often think about my public library colleagues. When I reflect on all the things I see going on in public libraries,I find so many things to admire about public librarians and the work they do!
Here are just a few:
They create incredible programming(and on a shoestring budget)! When I hear about the wonderful programming going on in public libraries,I am amazed at what they are able to create with limited financial resources.
They carry forward the banner of learning when school is not in session with summer reading programs. While some parents get their children involved in summer reading as a way to“keep them busy,”it should be obvious as to the value of these programs. It’s well known that children backslide in their learning over the summer, but it’s also well-known that summer reading programs help children keep their skills sharp for when school starts in the fall.
They bridge the gap for all readers. As a middle school librarian,I have children reading on a second-grade level and others taking high school English. It is hard to build a collection in one school that meets the full range of interests and abilities in that population.Filling that obligation is a central part of the mission of public librarians!
They care about the projects on which my students are working and try to have resources on hand to help.I’ve had a number of conversations with public librarians about student research.I know the motivation is making sure there are enough resources to cover the rush when students come in seeking resources, but I’m sincerely impressed by how deeply they care.
They provide that safe space and gathering space my students need outside of school.I know we all know this, but for many young people, the public library is uniquely positioned to provide space where they can work and study. What the public library also provides is a place to explore their interests without the pressure of being exposed or judged by others. What better gift is there than that?
So which of the points listed above is your favorite?Do you have any to add?I would love to read comments!
