[摘要] SOME 2,000 years ago, almost at the very beginning of European intellectual history, Archimedes is supposed to have asserted, "Give me a lever long enough, and a fulcrum strong enough, and singlehanded I can move the world." Some three and a half centuries ago, at the beginning of the intellectual development that has since become modern science, Francis Bacon exhorted philosophers to turn to the study of nature, for "Knowledge, too, is itself a power" (Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est).
