The message below accompanies the May 2025 edition of the IFLA Newsletter.
Carla Hayden was fired from her position as the Librarian of Congress of the United States of America earlier this month, in a two-sentence email, with no reason provided.
We’ve seen vocal support for Dr Hayden from IFLA’s President, Secretary General and its FAIFE (Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression) Advisory Committee along with the American Library Association.
Unlike any other time in recent history, librarians across the globe, particularly public librarians and library workers, find themselves on the front lines of access work, literally fighting every day to protect access to information and freedom of expression, the foundational principles of our profession. They do this through physical protection of materials, policy making, programming and services, big and small advocacy actions and technical practices and expertise.
Librarians come to the field, for a variety of reasons: A related passion, a challenge, a family member, a revelation or revolution. They want to give back or give support to their communities because they love books and love libraries and had formative moments within them. They see library work as social justice work and take on the role ready to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.
IFLA Headquarter’s own librarians, Aaron, Helen, Kristine, Louis, Vesna and I have found our home in this profession and have the great good fortune of getting to work alongside the most interesting, impressive and international community of library and information workers in the world. That’s you!
Whatever your reason for becoming a librarian or staying one, whatever your reason for joining IFLA as a member or volunteer or enthusiast, we are here for you. We hope you enjoy the articles brought to you this month – honouring and showcasing the library worker.
