The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals(CILIP)has awarded its highest accolade,the Honorary Fellowship,to Joseph Coelho,Alison Wheeler,and Briony Birdi in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the library and information sectors.
Libraries play a central role in our fast-changing digital world,and Honorary Fellowship honours the librarians,information and knowledge professionals who have set the highest standards and amplified the industry's reach.
Since 1896,CILIP has invited nominations from its membership to recognise professionals that have made a lasting difference to the world of libraries,and information and knowledge management.
The 2023 Honorary Fellowships were presented at the CILIP Annual General Meeting(AGM).
Joseph Coelho,award-winning poet,playwright and author,is the current Waterstones Children's Laureate.
He has recently completed an epic marathon of library services around the UK which saw him give countless media interviews promoting the importance of school and public libraries.
Joseph is awarded Honorary Fellowship of CILIP in recognition of his services to libraries and reading.
Alison Wheeler has enjoyed a long and successful leadership career in the public library sector.
Among her many contributions,she set up the first public library mutual,Suffolk Libraries,in 2012,and brokered the first national partnership agreement between public libraries and the NHS.
In 2018 she was awarded an MBE for services to libraries.
As CILIP's Honorary Treasurer,Alison has led the organisation through a challenging period and secured its long-term sustainability.
She is awarded Honorary Fellowship in recognition of her career-long contribution to the library and information profession to her professional body.
Professor Briony Birdi is a leading academic and researcher in the field of library and information science and a thought-leader in the fields of reader development and Diversity,Equality and Inclusion in libraries.
A key part of the faculty of the iSchool at the University of Sheffield,she is awarded Honorary Fellowship in recognition of her contribution to Library and Information Science and ethics.
In a video speech at the AGM,Joseph Coelho said of the award:
I am completely honoured to be made an honorary fellow,Its been a real delight joining all these libraries during the libraries marathon,and one thing has been incredibly clear to me:the passion and dedication of librarians wherever you go[...]Thank you so much for this huge honour,I am completely touched.
Commenting on her Honorary Fellowship,Alison Wheeler said:
From the age of 10,the only thing I ever wanted to be was a librarian.[...]All I can say to you is the more you put in to your professional body.The more you get out of it,it comes back in dividends.[...]thank you very much for this honor.It means a lot to me.
Professor Briony Birdi commented on the accolade:
I've learned so much about libraries.And from such fantastic and committed colleagues as I've met through my various committees and groups that I've been involved in in with CILIP.Being able to bring this learning into my teaching,developing new programme a new decolonizing framework all sounds very grand but actually it's just me learning from everyone else.[...]honestly,I'm just delighted.Absolutely delighted to have this.So thank you very,very much.
