The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) are seeking expressions of interest from employees of ARL or CNI institutions to serve on the Joint ARL/CNI Task Force on Scenario Planning for AI and Machine-Learning Futures.
Reporting jointly to ARL and CNI, the purpose of this task force is to articulate a set of scenarios for possible futures for the research enterprise that are heavily shaped by recent developments in AI and machine learning, with a particular emphasis on generative AI. The purpose is to help the ARL and CNI communities—and, indeed, the broader public—to better understand the possible outcomes of developments and policy choices, rather than to predict the future. The hope is that these materials will also be useful as a starting point for further discussions and strategic planning among and within CNI and ARL member institutions.
Applications
To apply, please submit the expression of interest form. Applications will remain open until Friday, October 20, 2023, and we anticipate notifying applicants by the end of October. Note that while potential task force members must be from ARL or CNI institutions, they need not be the representatives of record to ARL or CNI. We encourage member institutions to coordinate internally and submit no more than one expression of interest per institution.
Terms
Task force members shall serve a term that runs November 1, 2023–June 7, 2024.
Meetings
The expectation is that the vast majority of the meetings will be held via Zoom and that the group will meet roughly once a month.
Responsibilities
·Publish a set of possible AI-influenced scenarios based in the research enterprise.
·Identify opportunities to engage representatives of ARL and CNI member organizations in developing and engaging these scenarios.
